The new Belize Zoo was started in 1983 after 17 animals were left from the
filming of a documentary film. Over 100 animals have been added to the 84 acre site
since then - many of them are endangered species. The Zoo is worth the trip, since
it is well run, and with one notable exception, all of the animals seem to be happy, well
adjusted, and well cared for. Located approximately 29 miles from Belize City on the
Western Highway - an easy drive. Phone 501-081-3004. Open 9am-5pm most days.
