After my short stay in Nadi, it was time to start touring the island. My arrangements included taxi transfers between each location where I was staying. I was staying at the Reef Hotel, just south of the town of Sigatoka (pronounced singatoka). Frequent rain makes the main road messy since it is dirt and gravel, but the road is well maintained. The Reef Hotel offers moderately-priced accommodation, and is full of Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders. Fiji is to Australia and New Zealand which Hawaii is to Canadians and Americans - an easy to get to vacation destination. It appears that the Reef Hotel has been completely rebuilt since I was there, and the management has been taken over by Outrigger Hotels and Resorts (based in Hawaii). Here is some current information on this property - (Outrigger Reef Resort, Hotel on the Coral Coast, Fiji. I expect the beach, the views, and the town of Sigatoka are mostly the same, so my photos should still be useful to those who are interested in staying here. Staying at the Outrigger Reef Resort is a good idea for travellers who don't want to be isolated at a remote resort. The Reef is only a few minutes by taxi to Sigatoka, which offers shopping and a public market. Most resorts along the Coral Coast are fairly isolated, so consider this fact when booking in this area.
After a few days, it was time to move on to my next
destination - the capital, Suva. We stopped at a native Fijian village for
a brief stop, and another fruit stand. The fruit from these stands is very
fresh and inexpensive, and you will certainly help out the families who are
selling their produce, however do NOT eat any samples. Follow the standard
travel advice for fresh fruit - only buy fruit you can peel, and thoroughly wash
all fruit with pure water before eating.
South Coast - the next leg of my travels, which includes the Suva, as well as the Boat trip from Suva Harbour and my visit with the Fijian Family. |
